Our Creative Curriculum 2015-2016
This year has been an exciting time for the children in Year 1.
In the Autumn term, we started the year by designing and making some cute and cuddly teddy bears, just like the one in the story ‘Old Bear’. We invited our parents along to a fabulous Teddy Bear Auction where they made bids for our bears. We had lots of fun and raised lots of money.
The Spring term began with a very wet and windy walk to our local woods to kick start our ‘Enchanted Forest’ topic. As part of this topic we read and acted out the traditional tale ‘Hansel and Gretel, as well as designing sweetie houses, learning about different types of trees and using story jumper, a computer program where we can make our own fairy tales.
We have begun our Summer term with a Virtual African Safari and we also visited London Zoo to learn about some African animals. We have been busy learning facts about 5 animals in Africa and we are now making information booklets about them. What do you know about buffalo, leopard, lion, elephants and rhinos? We have enjoyed using the i-pads and non-fiction books for research. We have also been learning about the different ways of life in Africa, including what it might be like to live in a Masai tribe. We have even linked our Maths with Africa by problem solving, for example we had to find out many different ways we could fit people into a jeep to go on an African safari. There were lots of different combinations and we tried hard to work systematically to reach the conclusion.
When we have finished exploring Africa we will be venturing over to Rio to continue our ‘Around the World’ theme.
